Commonwealth Games 2022: All the athletes from Birmingham set to compete this summer

The last Commonwealth Games took place on Australia’s Gold Coast four years ago.

This year they will be held in Birmingham across 11 days between Thursday 28 July and Monday 8 August. It is the third time the games has been hosted in England, having previously been held in Manchester in 2002 and London in 1934.

The Commonwealth Games are often known as the ‘Friendly Games’ and only involve athletes from Commonwealth nations. There are 72 teams competing in the 2022 games and 286 sessions of sport with thousands of athletes competing - to see all those competing, click here.

These are the athletes from or near Birmingham who will be representing their home town at the games.

Adam Peaty OBE

Date of Birth: 28 December 1994

Age: 27

Place of birth: Uttoxeter

Sport: Swimming

About: In 2014 he won two gold medals for Team England in the 100m breaststroke and the 4x100m medal relay. Since then he has gone on to win 16 European titles and three Olympic Gold Medals.

He specialises in the breaststroke and is the first British swimmer to retain an Olympic title.

Peaty is currently the holder of world records in the 50 metre and 100 metre breaststroke events.

Eboni Usoro-Brown

Date of Birth: 4 February 1988

Age: 34

Place of Birth: Solihull

Sport: Netball

About: Eboni plays the defender position and goalkeeper in the Queensland Firebirds team. She is also a law graduate. She has appeared in three Commonwealth Games since 2008 and three world cups.

She won a gold medal at the Gold Coast games in 2018 then gave birth to her daughter in 2020.

Elliot Giles

Date of Birth: 26 May 1994

Age: 28

Place of Birth: Birmingham

Sport: Athletics

About: Elliot is part of the Birchfield Harriers Club and a middle distance runner.

He is an eight-time British champion and has competed in the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Giles won the bronze medal at the 2016 European Championships.

He set a new British Record for the 800m indoors in February 2021 when he was in Poland.

Jaswant Shergill

Date of Birth: 14 January 1993

Age: 29

Place of Birth: Birmingham

Sport: Weightlifting

About: Jaswant made his debut in 2014 and won the 67kg category at the British Championships in 2019.

He is a teacher by day but still competes professionally.

Shergill represented England at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the 62KG event.

Joe Fraser

Date of Birth: 6 December 1998

Age: 23

Place of Birth: Birmingham

Sport: Gymnastics

About: Joe is the first British person to win World Champion Gold on the parallel bars - he achieved this in 2019.

He came fourth at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the team event.

Fraser has been part of the British Senior Team since 2017.

He won silver in the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships with his team.

Kelly Petersen-Pollard

Date of Birth: 30 April 1999

Age: 23

Place of Birth: Sutton Coldfield

Sport: Judo

About: Kelly won three bronze medals in the IJF Grand Slams over the past two years. She is a European Junior Champion.

She competes in the 70KG category and started learning the sport at just age 4.

Kelly entered the senior European Championships in 2022 and came seventh.

Laura Unsworth

Date of Birth: 8 March 1988

Age: 34

Place of Birth: Sutton Coldfield

Sport: Hockey

About: She made her international debut in 2008 and has three Olympic medals. She is the UK’s most decorated hockey player.

She plays the midfield or defender positions in the game of Hockey and is part of the East Grinstead, England and Great Britain teams.

Laura competed in the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games and won a bronze and a silver medal.

Layla Guscoth

Date of birth: 2 March 1992

Age: 30

Place of Birth: Birmingham

Sport: Netball

About: Layla is a doctor by day, who volunteered for shifts during the coronavirus pandemic. She plays for the Team Bath Netball team and will be representing England at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Layle was part of the England team who won a bronze medal at the 2019 Netball World Cup.

Niall Farrell

Date of Birth: 6 September 1997

Age: 24

Place of Birth: Birmingham

Sport: Boxing

About: Niall has a European silver medal from 2017 but an injury has meant that he has not been able to compete for the past three years.

He competes in the flyweight category and boxes with the Kingstanding 2nd City ABC.

Sarah- Jane Perry

Date of Birth: 15 May 1990

Age: 32

Place of Birth Birmingham

Sport: Squash

About: Sarah received her first medal at the Commonwealth Games four years ago at the Gold Coast.

She reached the ranking of number 5th in the world in 2020.

Sarah was part of the England Team in 2013 when they won the European Squash Championships.

Stacey Francis-Bayman

Date of Birth: 1 January 1988

Age: 34

Place of Birth: Birmingham

Sport: Netball

About: Stacey has over 70 caps and has won five Super League titles with Team Bath.

She was part of the England teams who won bronze medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

In 2013 she was named the Netball Superleague Player of the Season.
