For much of 2022, newly-appointed Birmingham City F.C. coach Wayne Rooney and his wife, Coleen Rooney, were in the headlines.

Coleen was embroiled in a court case with Rebekah Vardy, who is married to Leicester City footballer Jamie Vardy, about her private social media posts being leaked to the press. It came to be known as the Wagatha Christie case.

Coleen had accused Rebekah in 2019 of leaking information about her private life to the press. So, she set a trap and published fake stories on her private Instagram account in a ploy to catch the person sharing her information, according to the Mirror UK.

Then, in October 2019, in social media posts Coleen revealed: “I have saved and screenshotted all the original stories which clearly show just one person has viewed them. It’s… Rebekah Vardy’s account.”

Rebekah, 41, denied the accusations and sued Coleen for libel. After the much-publicised trial in 2022, the judge ruled in favour of Coleen and dismissed the claims against her.

Rebekah was ordered to pay 90% of Coleen’s legal fees amounting to £1.5m. She also had to pay her own legal costs, bringing the total up to over £3m, according to The Guardian.

Now, Coleen is set to tell her side of the story through Coleen Rooney: The Real Wagatha Story which includes interviews with her and her family, including Blues coach Wayne Rooney. The documentary is set to release on Disney+ on Wednesday 18th October.

In a recent interview, on The One Show BBC, Coleen said: “I put warning posts out there, saying ‘someone was leaking my private information’ and it just didn’t stop, it continued and I just had enough and I just wanted it done with.”

In a trailer released before the release of the documentary, she said: “I needed evidence, I had to set a trap.” She tearfully adds: “It was constantly on my mind. My dad said you are just not you anymore.” The trailer ends with her saying: “Don’t play games with a girl who can play it better.”
