Meet Sian O’Toole, top professional boxing champ by night – maths teacher by day.

It’s an unusual mix that flies in the face of the game’s blood and bruises image, but Sian – bright and articulate in interview – believes she’s hit on a winning formula for success.

Sian is as far away from Rocky as you can get. On Wednesday (December 20) the 24-year-old became a champion to the delight of her pupils.

At Birmingham’s Eastside Rooms, the former fine amateur outpointed Beccy Ferguson for the Midlands featherweight title. Cheering her on loudly from ringside was partner and Birmingham ring legend Frankie Gavin. He had their son, two-year-old Michael, in his arms.

Sian admits parents at the schools where she works are a little shocked when she reveals her other job. “I’ve always been academic,” she said. “My mum and dad support my boxing, but always stressed the importance of studies.”

Sian, a former outstanding amateur who has had two pro outings, works at Bishop Perowne School, in Worcester, and for Access Educational Provision which helps youngsters who have struggled in mainstream education.

“They do love the fact I’m a professional boxer,” she said. “I’ve always let them watch my fights (on video) at the end of lessons. They look up to me and I use what I’ve done to show them there’s something out there for everybody, that there is light at the end of the tunnel. And the schools have been very supportive.”

Sian studied human biology and sports coaching science at university while, at the same time, boxing for her country. Her amateur career was illustrious. Sian gained a host of national honours, represented Britain and boxed around the globe.

Life is non-stop for the mother, teacher and fighter, but Sian wouldn’t have it any other way. She added: “Being so busy is something I am very used to. When I was at university I had a lot on the go at the same time with my studies and boxing. Some days are harder than others, but it’s all worth it and I want to show Michael that there are no limitations and anything worth doing isn’t easy.

“Nobody should have to stop following their dreams because life gets in the way. I want to make Michael proud.” The next time Sian steps into a classroom she’ll have something special to show pupils – her championship belt.
