A 12-year-old boy died after his ‘e-scooter collided with a bus’ in Birmingham’s Bordesley Green.

The school boy, who has not been named, was riding an e-scooter when he collided with a bus on Bordesley Green, near to the junction with Belchers Lane, just before 8am today (December 6).

He was sadly confirmed dead at the scene, despite the best efo.

The road was cordoned off while crash investigators examined the scene and police are urging any witnesses to get in touch.

The youngster’s family has been told, and are being supported by specially trained officers. Det Sgt Paul Hughes, of West Midlands Police’ serious collision investigation unit, said: “This is an awful tragedy for the young boy’s family and friends, and our thoughts are with them at this time.

“We’ve spoken to a number of witnesses, but still want to hear from any of the passengers on the bus who we’ve not yet spoken to, or from people who may have captured what happened on dashcam.

What has West Midlands Ambulance Service said about the tragic incident?

West Midlands Ambulance service also attended the scene. A spokesperson said: “A teenage boy has sadly died following a road traffic collision in Bordesley Green this morning.

“West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to the incident involving a bus and an electric scooter in Bordesley Green, Birmingham at 07.57am and sent two ambulances and two paramedic officers to the scene.

“On arrival crews discovered the rider of the scooter, a teenage boy. He had sustained life threatening injuries and was in a critical condition. Unfortunately, it became clear that nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed deceased at the scene. Nobody from the bus required treatment.”

High rate of road accidents in Birmingham

A study by car insurance experts Car Insurance, analysed Department of Transport data from 2013 to 2020 in all local authorities across the West Midlands, on the rate of reported road accidents per 1,000 people.

Birmingham has more car accidents than anywhere else in the region which may not be surprising as it has the biggest population. However, the city also has the highest rate of accidents - with 2.26 accidents per 1,000 people which is 32% higher than the West Midlands average of 1.7.

There are also 2,547 road accidents reported every year in the city - the highest number in the West Midlands.

However, the most dangerous roads in the region are in Warwickshire which has a score of 2.28 accidents per 1,000 people.
