Sandwell Queen’s Baton Relay 2022: Where and when can you see the Queen’s Baton Relay in Sandwell?

The Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay will be covering nearly the whole borough of Birmingham as part of its final stages of the event.

As part of the build up for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, starting on July 28th, the relay hopes to bring communities together to build excitement for the event.

Sandwell will be one of only two Birmingham areas to have the baton for the whole day meaning that 100 batonbearers will be taking to the streets.

Queen Elizabeth launched the 16th Baton Relay from Buckingham Palace on October 7th 2021, where she placed her message to the Commonwealth inside the baton.

The Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay has already travelled all over the world and is covering the 72 nations and territories in the Commonwealth.

Travelling all over Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania, the Caribbean and the Americas, the baton will not make it back to England until July 4th 2022.

When is the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay happening in Sandwell?

The Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay is going to be coming through Sandwell on Monday July 25th.

It will start from Sandwell Council House in Oldbury just after 8am.

There will be celebrations and events happening along the route over the duration of the day as the baton travels through Sandwell.

What is the route for the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay in Sandwell?

After starting at Sandwell Council house the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay, it then moves on the following route:

• Brunswick Park, Wednesbury
• Victoria Park, Tipton
• Haden Hill House and Park, Rowley Regis
• Sandwell Aquatics Centre, Smethwick
• Lightwoods Park, Smethwick
• Sandwell Valley Country Park, West Bromwich at approximately 6:30pm.

Who are the batonbearers for the Sandwell Queen’s Baton relay?

There are thousands of batonbearers that have had the honour of carrying the baton all over the world.

Each batonbearer has their own inspiring story and have been nominated to participate due to their contributions to their local community.

Two confirmed Sandwell batonbearers are Suzy Richards and her son Owen.

Suzy’s family, including her sons Owen and Joel, her brother Adrian and father Pat were all on holiday in Tunisia in 2015 when a gunman attacked the resort they were staying at.

Suzy and Owen lost three of their family members in the attack and together they have set up the charity Smile For Joel, that aims to fundraise for Victim Support to help families suffering the loss of a loved one due to homicide.

Together the mother and son have raised thousands by organising numerous events, including their Run for Joel at Sandwell Valley Park.

Suzy told Sandwell Council why her son Owen had been nominated to be a batonbearer for the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay.

Suzy said: “My son Owen has overcome adversity and has shown great courage after being a victim in the 2015 Tunisia atrocity, at just 16.

“Owen was injured and witnessed the death of his brother Joel, grandad Pat and uncle Adrian. Despite such a horrific loss and life-changing experience, he continued his sports studies at university. He then decided he wanted to make a difference to other families affected by homicide.

“Owen is the co-founder of the charity Smileforjoel.com which supports victims of homicide. Owen is an inspiration to his local community and other young people of his age.”
