Warwickshire County Cricket Club announced the signing of Moeen Ali this morning (6 July).

35-year-old Ali has joined on a three year deal which is primarily a white ball contract, meaning he will play T20 and One Day Cup Cricket.

However, he is also available to play red ball cricket in the County Championship on a pay as you play basis.

Moee Ali is a born and raised Brummie who was born in Sparkhill, Birmingham. He started his professional cricketing journey with Warwickshire aged just 15-years-old.

The left-handed batter and right-arm spinner developed through the Warwickshire Academy and Second XI ranks, striking a half-century on his first-class and County Championship debuts.

Now, 20 years later, he has returned to the cricket ground he first called home.

He will also be playing cricket in the second season of The Hundred as captain of Birmingham Phoenix.

During his time at Worcestershire, he also received his first England call up and went on to enjoy many years of success in both red and white ball cricket.

After signing on the dotted line, Ali spoke to Warwickshire Cricket Club about how he is delighted to return to a club and a city that his life has always centred around.

He said: “I’m delighted to return home to Edgbaston. I was born and raised just a few miles away from the stadium, with my life always centred around Birmingham.

“When the opportunity presented itself, it was a decision I couldn’t say no to and I believe I have unfinished business at the Bears.”

Ali added: “I’m incredibly excited to be back and to play in front of the best atmosphere in world cricket.

“It’s a place that has so much history and players always have memories and stories of playing here. I’m looking forward to contributing and being part of hopefully something special.”

Following his retirement from Test cricket last year, Moeen Ali has still been a regular member of the one day squad.
