The ‘Floozie in the Jacuzzi’ returns to Victoria Square in Birmingham

The Floozie in the Jacuzzi, whose official name is The River, has returned to her place of glory in Birmingham city centre’s Victoria Square. The statue has been on a bit of a spa break for the past six months. Now she has returned glowing and refreshed ahead of a busy summer with the Commonwealth Games on the way.

The statue, sometimes referred to as The Goddess, had spent 28 years in the bath before she was lifted out last October. Her return is the latest milestone in the restoration of Dhruva Mistry’s water feature. It was completed in 1994 after two years of construction, and is an iconic part of Birmingham for many people.

Samara said: “It’s absolutely amazing. I noticed that it’s gone and it’s really nice to see it back. It felt like a part of Birmingham was missing. And now that it’s here, it’s very nice to see it.

“And I’m excited for the scaffolding to go so we can take pictures next to it and stuff. So like, yeah, it’s very nice to see it. And I can’t wait for them to finish all the construction, when you get to see it in all of its glory. It’s gonna be amazing.”

Paula said: “I’m really excited. I think it’s a city centre attraction. It’s a bit of art. I think people might not have noticed that it was gone, but they’ll definitely notice that it’s back. It’s a place where people can meet. And now hopefully if the weather’s getting better, people can make use of it so outside by the Floozy in the Jacuzzi!”

The return of the statue is part of a wider restoration of the Victoria Square as Birmingham goes through its regeneration over recent years. So far plenty of structural repairs have already taken place. The feature is set to reopen to the public later this year.
