Devoted parents react as two lying Birmingham brothers are convicted over collision which killed their sons

Two Birmingham men have been convicted after lying about a tragic collision which claimed the lives of young brothers Sanjay and Pawanveer Singh.

The youngsters - aged 10 and 23 months - were dressed in their pyjamas and heading home in a BMW with their mum, Arithi Nahar, after collecting their supper from a fish bar, where their father worked, when they were fatally hit by a high-powered Audi. Both boys suffered catastrophic injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene on Birmingham New Road in Wolverhampton at around 8.45pm in March 14, 2019. Arithi suffered serious injuries in the collision.

Mohammed Sullaiman Khan, who was driving the Audi, reached speeds of 90mph before he went through a red light at the junction with Lawnswood Avenue - and hit the BMW. The force of the impact had pushed the BMW across the verge and into metal railings.

Mohammed Sullaiman Khan fled and by about 10pm, he was in a burger bar in Sparkbrook. CCTV shows him in discomfort from the impact of the collision he’d been in less than two hours earlier. At some point a plan was hatched to cover-up his involvement and at 10.20pm police were called by Mohammed Asim Khan saying his brother Mohammed Sullaiman Khan’s car had been taken in a car-key burglary earlier that day. It was alleged that the Audi had been racing with a Bentley driven by Hamza Shahid, but he was cleared of charges.

What happened at the trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court?

• Mohammed Sullaiman Khan, aged 27, of Pershore Road, Edgbaston, admitted two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, and one count of causing serious injury at an earlier hearing. During the trial he further admitted perverting the course of justice.
• Mohammed Asim Khan, 35, of Shaftmoor Lane, Hall Green, was found guilty of perverting the course of justice for lying to police about the ‘burglary’.
• Mohammed Adil Khan, 34, of Newnham Road, Edgbaston, and Rashane Henry 31, of Fairway Green, Bilston, were cleared of perverting the course of justice.
• Hamza Shahid, 35, of Newbridge Road, Birmingham, was found not guilty of causing death by dangerous driving and also not guilty of causing serious injury. He denied racing the Audi, and told the court he had been speeding to avoid the aggressive driving of Khan.
• A sixth man Tejinder Singh, 30, of Babors Field, Bilston, who denies conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and assisting an offender, will be tried at a date to be confirmed.

DC Karl Davies, from our Serious Collision Investigation Unit, who lead the enquiries, said: "Our duty was to Sanjay and Pawanveer and to their family, who have been so brave throughout. It is awful, almost beyond words, for two young brothers to be killed in such a dreadful collision." The Khan brothers will be sentenced at a later date.

The family of the youngsters said today: “As a family we would firstly like to say a big thank you to West Midlands Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit for investigating Sanjay and Pawanveer’s case.

“Sanjay attended Cotwall End Primary School, Sedgley where they have made a sunshine garden. This garden has provided a safe, secure place where our family and friends can visit. It’s there where we feel at peace after the sad loss of both of our sons.

“We as parents of Sanjay & Pawanveer miss them terribly, we will never see them grow up into teenagers and then later as adults. We have been robbed of that. Our boys were taken away in a blink of an eye on the 14th March 2019. The day that our lives & our home died too.

“With the support of our family, friends, loved ones, colleagues and professionals like Victim support and Edwards Trust we have developed a new way of living again with this constant pain and bleed in our hearts.”
