An elderly cat abandoned by its owner in Birmingham is looking for a forever home, said animal charity RSPCA.

Smokey, the cat, is 14 years old and living at RSPCA’s Birmingham Animal Centre. He is a black coloured domestic longhair crossbreed living at the animal charity’s premisis at Newbrook Farm on Frankley Green Lane.

An RSPCA spokesperson said: “Smokey was collected from a house in Birmingham. The owner moved out of the family home and left him behind but the other family members couldn’t care for him.

“He was very underweight and suffering from dental disease when he arrived which was making it difficult for him to eat which is most likely what caused his weight loss.”

However, he is on the mend after receiving medical attention. Smokey has received a few extractions and scale and polish. The animal charity said that he feels much better and his appetite returned and as a result, he gained lots of weight.

He was a little shy when he first arrived at the animal centre but it didn’t take him long to show his sweet side. He loves being fussed over and like other senior cats spends most of his day curled up in his comfy bed snoozing away. He is a long haired cat and so he will need regular grooming which he loves.

He may be able to live with another cat and would prefer not to live with a dog. He can live with children of secondary school age and would need space to go out and explore.

Smokey is looking for a quiet retirement home, and if you would like to offer him this you can get in touch with RSPCA Birmingham. The Animal Centre is currently working on an appointment only process and they are available from 11am-3.15pm. The centre is closed on Tuesdays.
