Commonwealth Games Brummie Bull breaks silence on his uncertain future

The mighty Brummie Bull - star of the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony - watches over the residents of Birmingham every day in Centenary Square.

The raging bull took up residence after the Commonwealth Games 2022 Opening Ceremony following a popular campaign from the people who didn’t want to see him go. They set up a petition to save him.

While the Games are over, the 10m bull persists. He has warmed the hearts of thousands who have travelled into the city centre especially to see him and every day people snap new photos of him - or just stand and admire his might.

A campaign to save this unlikely star of the Games was partially successful when the powers that be announced he could remain until September.

BirminghamWorld contacted the Brummie Bull to find out if he knew what was going to happen to him after the September deadline. But he told us: “I’d love to be able to answer your question. I keep asking Birmingham City Council but not got any response. I know I’m outside until end of September, but not a clue after that.”

The iconic bull played a key part in the Opening Ceremony, first appearing alongside female performers representing the female chain-makers of the Industrial Revolution - who were actually making chains for the slave trade. The irony being that they too were slaves of sort, as they were underpaid and overworked.

Making the Brummie Bull was a long and arduous process undertaken by Artem Ltd. The whole structure is 10m high x 4.5m wide x 15m long but weighs only 2.5 tonnes.

What has Birmingham City Council & the Comonwealth Games said about the future of the Brummie Bull?

The Brummie Bull is owned by Birmingham Ceremonies , the production company appointed by the Organising Committee for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, to produce and deliver the Opening and Closing Ceremonies./

On 5 August, Cllr Ian Ward, Leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “We are delighted with the response the Bull has had from the Opening Ceremony which reflects our history.

“The diverse history of Birmingham is one of the reasons we were successful in our bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the way residents and visitors have embraced the Bull shows how important this is.”

No official announcement has been made since on the future of the Brummie Bull. But BirminghamWorld understand that disussions are ongoing.
