Man arrested after boy, 12, dies in Coventry Road collision in South Yardley, Birmingham

A man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and being unfit through drugs after a child died in Birmingham yesterday (Thursday, June 8).

The incident took place on Coventry Road in South Yardley at around 6.15pm. It was attended by three ambulances, two paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma doctor and critical care paramedic and the West Midlands CARE Team.

Despite their best efforts, the 12-year-old boy died at the scene. The 32 year-old man who has been arrested remains in police custody this afternoon.

West Midlands Police are now appealing for witnesses. Officers said the youngster was riding a pedal bike when he was struck by a car. A WMP spokesperson said: “We are supporting his family with specially trained officers as they try to come to terms with what has happened.”

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, added: “We are appealing for witnesses and in particular for people with dash cam footage to please contact us. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the boy and we are doing all we can to support them at this very difficult time.”
