Man arrested in Birmingham city centre after stabbing 26-year-old woman in domestic incident

A 46-year-old man was arrested after a woman was stabbed in Birmingham City Centre today (16 August) in what is believed to be a domestic incident.

The West Midlands Police were called to Temple Row at around 9.50am after the 26-year-old woman was attacked. She was taken to hospital and remains in a serious condition. A 46-year-old man was detained on Newhall Street in relation to the case. The man was also taken to hospital after sustaining an injury as the horror unfolded in front of shoppers and commuters outside the posh Great Western Arcade.

The police said they believe it’s an isolated incident and they are not looking for any other suspects.

Detective Superintendent Ed Foster, said: “Thanks to members of the public who helped us track the suspect, we were able to detain him within minutes of the incident happening. He has been taken to hospital after sustaining an injury during the incident, but remains under police detention.”

There are officers in the area carrying out enquiries and to offer reassurance to the public.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called to reports of a stabbing on Temple Row, Birmingham at 9.53am. “Two ambulances, two paramedic officers and the West Midlands CARE team medics attended. Crews arrived to find a woman with serious injuries. A short time later a second patient, a man, was found nearby with injuries. Both were treated on scene by ambulance staff before being conveyed to hospital for further emergency care.”

Earlier this year, Office for National Statistics data on crime in the West Midlands showed a sharp rise in domestic violence incidents. A 37% rise was recorded after West Midlands Police received over 66,000 reports during the time period of October 2020 up to the end of September 2021.

A statement from West Midlands Police had said: “We continue to invest in key initiatives to help victims of stalking and harassment report crime and officers are better equipped to deal with these reports.

“We know that these types of offences can impact on how safe people feel, and we are working to improve officers’ knowledge so they are able to earlier identify patterns of this type of behaviour. Training has also been refreshed to address safety in the home for children who are victims of abuse.”
