Indian street food and craft beer specialists Bundobust is opening a restaurant in Birmingham city centre this summer - in the venue on Bennetts Hill where Pint Shop and Nude Bar & Grill were located.

It will be the fifth UK venue for the vegetarian and vegan Gujarati street food specialists. BirminghamWorld received an invitation to head down to the Bundobust brewery and restaurant in Manchester Piccadilly to discover more about the plans. It was an invitation that we couldn’t turn it down.

After all, Bundobust’s street food and craft beer has even been decribed as “uncompromising and self-confident and, above all else, clever,” by food critic Jay Rayner. Split across two floors, the new Birmingham restaurant, is set to have a intimate, pub-like feel, so a bit like its predecessors at this fab Brum location.

But this time the building’s Georgian architectural charm and original features will be offset by Bundobust’s vibrant colour palette. There will be booths in snug spaces and cosy corners for seating as well as a beer hall-style seating, and it’s also dog-friendly and welcomes both bookings and walk-ins.

‘Bundo’, as it’s also known, first opened in Leeds and has expanded to various locations in Northern England - as well as Manchester, there’s one in Liverpool. So the Birmingham one will be the first step further down south for the company. The craft beer makers brew their beer in Manchester, which is where I went on what was a gloriously sunny Saturday afternoon ( on May 20).

Myself and other writers and bloggers from Birmingham were invited onto a private Bundobust coach up to Manchester, where we were given a special Bundobust gift bag, which had a couple of the brewery’s own craft beers, as well as some Bundo snacks. These included their own tasty colourful rice puffs - and we were also given our own brilliant Bundobust t-shirt.

On arrival to the restaurant, the founders of the business Marco Husak and Mayur Patel gave a short introduction about the company before we tucked into the dishes. First up were the okra fries and krispy onion and kale bhajis, followed by the delicious Bundo Chaat, which includes samosa pastry, chickpea and potato onion, sev and chili sauce as well as yoghurt and tamarind chutney.

More dishes followed, as did some of Bundo’s very own delightful cream and pale ales. My personal favourite dish was the vada pav veggie burger. This delicious mashed potato burger with chutney really hit the spot. If I had to recommend another dish from the menu it would have to be the chole saag - which includes chickpeas and spinach stewed in garam massala, served with toasted brioche - or the paneer kadai, which is simmered in a rich mixed pepper and tomato sauce with onions, deggi mirch and kasturi methi.

Although I stuck to the Bundo beers - my favourites being the manak cream ale and peela pale ale - the restaurant also has a range of wines and cocktails available to choose from. The eatery offers creative cocktails with an Indian twist (think Banana & Cardamom Old Fashioned and Coconut & Mango Mojito). I was really impressed by the food at Bundo - and craft beer connoisseurs in Birmingham will absolutely have to head down to Bennetts Hill when the restaurant opens its doors in the near future.

Bundobust will also feature collaborative brews from Brummie breweries, including Attic Brew Co in Stirchley. I will definitely be heading down to the Birmingham restaurant for more of the delicious paneer kadai!
