Britain’s Got Talent returned to our television screens on Saturday night (April 15) and one Black Country contestant wowed the judges.

ITV said last night’s episode was the broadcaster’s highest rated programme of the year so far based on overnight figures. Last night’s premiere saw the first appearance of new judge Bruno Tonioli on the show as he joined Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and Simon Cowell for the auditions, which took place earlier this year in London and Manchester.

Former Strictly Come Dancing judge Tonioli gave a children’s dance group from Uganda the series’ first golden buzzer, which sends the act straight through to the competition’s live semi-final, and a pregnant mum from Tipton produced a stunning cover of Beyoncé’s ‘Listen’.

Who is Amy Lou?

Amy Lou, from Tipton, was one of the episode’s stand-out contestants. Amy has a four-year-old son and was 30 weeks pregnant during the audition. The 34-year-old sunbed shop worker then went on to produce a stunning version of the Beyonce classic.

Amy charmed the judges before she even started singing, mentioning she mainly sings in local pubs, saying ‘whoever will have me, really’. She attended the auditition with her her parents and partner. Shortly after she began her cover, the audience started clapping and the judges were taken aback with her voice during the powerful rendition.

After the performance, the audience and judges rose to their feet which left Amy with tears in her eyes.

Alesha Dixon said: “Amy that was by far my favourite audition so far.” Amanda Holden added: “The minute you started singing I was just covered in goosebumps and I was thinking your baby’s probably having a lovely little sleep in there and then she’s gone “Oh here we go! - you are a star and I cannot wait to see what happens for you!”

Simon Cowell described Amy’s performance as astonishing, and he even did his own impression of the Birmingham accent. He said: “Well that doesn’t happen. Amy Lou from Birmingham - by the way my mum lives in Birmingham by the way so I am a Brummie. But i’m sorry it doesn’t happen.”

Simon continued: “You come out 30 weeks pregnant and I was thinking we could actually have our first birth on stage and I watched you watch the audience reaction and I don’t think i’ve ever seen anyone so connected in all my years of doing this. That was actually quite incredible.

He added: Amy, this is your stage, this is your moment, and whatever happens next is just going to be amazing. Really you deserved this.” Amy then of course received four yeses from the judges
