12 iconic photos of Birmingham Bullring from 1840 to 2020

From its award winning friendliness to iconic silver discs - Birmingham’s Bullring has been through some dramatic changes over the years

Set in the heart of Birmingham city centre the Bullring is one of the best known landmarks for locals, workers and visitors from near and far.

It is where the story of Birmingham began, after it transformed from a riverside settlement to village, town and eventually city in 1899.

Here are 12 fascinating photos capturing a few of its iconic moments.

The first image shows the Bull Ring (as it was known then) in 1840 - before Queen Victoria granted it city status.

There also shots of the Bull Ring Centre being built in the 1960s and the opening of the flyover.

Four decades later, in 2001, the Bull Ring was demolished and the new Bullring took its place.

In 2007 the new Bullring, including its eye-catching Selfridges building, was crowned one of the UK’s favourite landmarkets.

A year later markets won an award for their ‘friendliness and value for money’ in 2008.

We hope you enjoy the trip down memory lane.
