Section 60 powers are in place in East Birmingham today (May 1) after several incidents of disorder involving weapons.

Section 60 gives the police the power to stop and search and make any search they think fit whether or not they have any grounds for suspecting that the person or vehicle is carrying weapons or articles of that kind.

West Midlands Police shared on social media: “Section 60 powers enable us to stop and search people we suspect may be involved in violence, without the need to have reasonable grounds.

“The powers will cover the B8 and B9 postcodes of the city until 9am tomorrow (May 1) and we’ll have increased patrols in place. Our priority is to keep you safe.”

Previously, seven men were arrested after shots were fired in Hockley Close. The men were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The police have shared a map of the area where the powers are in place.

They are also appealing for any information on gun or knife crime. You can contact them on Live Chat on West Midlands Police website .
