Birmingham weather: Met Office issues yellow warning for thunderstorms - exact time it will hit

Following a week of intense heat, Birmingham looks set to be hit with two days of thunderstorms.

The region experienced temperatures of well above 30C for most of last week, but a drastic change in the weather will have you reaching for your brolley rather than the sun cream.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for large parts of the UK, including across Birmingham and the West Midlands.

Here’s what you need to know about when the warning is in place, what kind of weather we can expect to see, and when the warning is due to expire.

When does the weather warning come into place?

The Met Office yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued from 10am on Monday, 15 August to 11.59pm on Tuesday, 16 August.

When is the exact time we could see thunderstorms in Birmingham?

Despite the warning being in place for almost two full days, the Met Office has estimated that thunder and lightning may not be seen/ heard in Birmingham until Tuesday evening (16 August).

According to the hourly forecast, this time could be 7pm, with rain expected several hours before and after.

What can we expect from the yellow weather warning?

The Met Office has released information on what people affected by the weather warning could expect to see over the next few days.

This information reads:

  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

What is the Met Office outlook for the week ahead?

15 August

After a mild and mostly dry start with some sunny spells, it will turn rather cloudy. Showers, at times heavy and thundery, will then develop through the morning with a risk of hail and lightning. Feeling humid, though less hot. Maximum temperature 27 °C.

15 August:

Showers, remaining thundery and heavy at times, will continue throughout the night, although ease a little through the early hours of the morning. Mild again. Minimum temperature 13 °C.

16 August:

Tuesday will be rather cloudy with further heavy, thundery showers developing through the day. There will still be plenty of dry spells between the showers. Humid. Maximum temperature 24 °C.

Further thundery showers on Wednesday, especially in the south. Mostly dry with sunny spells on Thursday. Further rain on Friday for a time. Turning cooler throughout.
