Birmingham strike days: when will there be rail, mail, NHS, ambulance, UCU strikes?

A number of strike days in December will affect mail, railways, NHS, ambulance services, and universities across the country, including in Birmingham.

Prior planning will be necessary for those looking to travel or use healthcare services. The holidays might be affected for some people as well.

The workers are taking up industrial action to seek an increase in their salaries because of real time pay cuts because of the cost of living crisis.

Here are all the dates when the various services will be affected due to industrial action:

When will the NHS and ambulance workers go on strike?

Royal College of Nursing members working for NHS employers in England will take strike action on December 15 and 20. Thousands of operations are expected to be cancelled because of it.

Meanwhile, the Unite and GMB unions announced that ambulance service workers voted in favour of industrial action. The dates for these strikes have not been declared yet.

When postal workers will strike

The CWU has announced their strike dates as follows: December 1, December 9, December 11, and December 14 in 2022.

“Items posted the day before, during or in the days after any strike action will be subject to delay. We will provide further details of the expected delays to items during the period of industrial action,” said Royal Mail.

When railway workers will strike

The RMT union have announced industrial action impacting Train Operators and Network Rail on the following dates:

Tuesday 13, Wednesday 14, Friday 16 and Saturday 17 December 2022

Additionally, the union have announced action short of a strike between Sunday 18 December 2022 - Monday 2 January 2023. The impact on services during this time is to be confirmed.

Due to the knock-on effect of strike action, some evening services will be subject to alteration on December 12 2022. More details will be added as soon as possible.

Tuesday 13, Wednesday 14, Friday 16 and Saturday 17 December 2022

A very limited service will be in operation between 0700 – 1900 only. Some routes will not be served.

Services will be in operation on the following lines only, between the hours of 0700 – 1900 only:

    Lichfield Trent Valley – Birmingham New Street – Redditch / Bromsgrove Birmingham New Street – Wolverhampton – Crewe Birmingham New Street – Wolverhampton (via local stations) Birmingham New Street – Northampton – London Euston

    West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway services will not operate on any other route on these days.

    Due to the knock-on effect of strike action, morning services on December 15 2022 will start up later than usual. First services on some routes may be very busy.

When will university workers go on strike?

Staff will also begin industrial action short of strike action (ASOS) from Wednesday November 23 onwards at institutions in England. UCU said that ASOS will affected a number of Birmingham’s higher education institutions as well.

Action short of a strike (ASOS) will consist of the following until further notice:

  • working to contract
  • not covering for absent colleagues
  • removing uploaded materials related to, and/or not sharing materials related to, lectures or classes that will be or have been cancelled as a result of strike action
  • not rescheduling lectures or classes cancelled due to strike action
  • not undertaking any voluntary activities.

Universities affected in Birmingham include University of Birmingham, Aston University, Birmingham City University, and University College Birmingham.
