The Asian Curry Awards – dubbed the “Curry Oscars” - has revealed this year’s shortlist, and ten restaurants in and around Birmingham have made the cut.
The Asian Curry Awards cover the complete range of Asian and Oriental cuisines: Bangladeshi, Burmese, Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Malaysian, Middle Eastern, Pakistani, Singaporean, Sri Lankan, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese.
In Birmingham, curry restaurants are leading the way in sheer numbers with six named as finalists along with two Chinese restaurants, and one restaurant that serves Bangladeshi cuisine. It’s a battle for the top spot between the most popular Asian dining spots in the UK where the long-established restaurants and new ones compete against each other.
The winners will be revealed at the Grosvenor House in London on Sunday November 19. You can still vote for your favourites on the Asian Curry Awards website. Here are the 10 Birmingham and Solihull restaurants in the shortlist:

5. Zindiya, Moseley
Zindiya, an independent restaurant, serves street food and great drinks. You will taste the food from street markets of Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata here.

6. Opheem on Summer Row - food rating 5
Aktar Islam’s dining room is praised over and over again. It’s one of the top-10 most mentioned outside London in the guide’s poll - and has been described as “the best Indian restaurant outside London”. It’s not just known for its amazing food also its stunningly beautiful decor. Opheem also has a Michelin star.

7. MyLahore, Bordesley
This 21-year-old British Asian restaurant serves a diverse menu. You will find pakoras, samosas, and also crispy chicken here as well as cheese naans and nuggets. They have left no stones unturned in ensuring that everyone finds something they like here. It’s not just a curry house as you can find noodles, burgers, paninis and sandwiches too. It started in Yorkshire but has multiple locations around the country now.

8. Alleppey Boat, Hall Green
Located on Stratford Road, this restaurant specialises in Kerala cuisine. Kerala is a southern Indian state and its named after the city of Alleppey - known as the Venic of the east. (Photo - Arundhati - stock.adobe.com)
