Birmingham city centre is undergoing a huge amount of regeneration - here’s a look at how local people feel about the developments

Birmingham is a city under construction and everywhere you go there seems to be work going on. It’s all part of a wider regeneration - but can be a hindrance as well as an eyesore. We ask Brummies if it’s all too much, much too quickly - and if it’s generally a blessing or a curse.

Jasmine says: “When I lived here last year, it was very hard to get around, especially the Digbeth area was really under construction at that point. And I just don’t really know what they’re doing to everything. It just seems to constantly be under construction. And it’s like, I don’t think there’s much more that needs to be done.”

Darren says: “Depends if you’re a car driver, or whatever, but development is always a good thing, isn’t it? Yeah, you know, a development is an improvement - something that will improve the city in the long term. So for me, it’s not a hindrance.”

Joe says: “So I suppose as a construction project manager myself, actually, I think it is a vital part of the rejuvenation of the city. I think obviously there is going to be a bit of a hindrance. But I’d like to think that the end result is probably worth it. I know it does cause a bit of disruption and there’s a fair bit going on but I do think it is an important thing to have.”

Millie says: “I think it’s a bit bad for the environment because, it’s like, destroying so much nature - and when it’s dark, and then lights all go on, the birds can’t navigate to where they need to go at the stars.”
