The 60 beloved Birmingham pubs that Brummies want to protect

A campaign to protect Birmingham’s best loved pubs has had an outstanding response with 60 boozers nominated so far

The fire and demolition of The Crooked House left people across Birmingham and the West Midlands devastated.

Local pubs are a cornerstone of our communities across the city and region - treasured landmarks where people of all walks of life come together and memories are made.

There are approximately 1,200 pubs in the city and region, yet only 133 of them are on Historic England listings.

Now more than 150 locals have responded to a call from the Campaign for Real Lale (CAMRA) and the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) to better protect local pubs - especially those with historic links.

The ‘List Your Local’ campaign was only launched two weeks ago, but the response has been phenomenal, with some pubs receiving several nominations.

So far 60 local pubs have been nominated for protection - you can see the full list below.

The campaign follows a report by the WMCA in which several recommendations have been highlighted to save pubs from closure - either due to financial reasons or from developers closing pubs and redeveloping them for other uses.

One of the recommendations includes an extension to the hospitality discount rate. Pubs currently benefit from a 75% discount on their business rate bills, capped at £110,000, but this is due to end in March 2024.

As well as reviewing historical sites, the review by the WMCA and CAMRA also explores how local plans can be better utilised to protect pubs and to ensure those that are illegally shut down or demolished are rebuilt "brick by brick".

Some of the pubs have been nominated as community assets, others as heritage pubs and some have been selected as both. Some of the pubs already have Historic England heritage listed status. If you would like to nominate one please go to: List Your Local
