Photos show the once busy shopping centre in Garretts Green left empty and derelict, as plans for regenerating the area still haven’t got off the ground

The Poolway Shopping Centre and housing estate in Birmingham was once a thriving community hub with many businesses, but since closing in 2017, the ground it once occupied has been left derelict.

The shopping centre and estate was demolished a couple of years ago, and there have been plans to transform the shopping centre on the Meadway into new housing and shops after approval was given by Birmingham City Council, but as of yet, the ground where it once stood remains empty with work yet to begin.

The site had also been earmarked to be the home of a new heritage and and cultural arts centre, led by the Birmingham Museums Trust in 2021, but as of today, the regeneration work is yet to begin.

Photos of the empty shopping centre emerged in 2018 months after its closure. At the time, the abandoned shopping centre made the centre of the Garretts Green neighbourhood look like a ghost town.

We’ve taken a look at the photos which show the derelict shopping centre and hosuing estate, as well as photos of what the land looks like today.
