A police officer was taken to hospital on Saturday morning (December 16) after a crash in Birmingham city centre.

A taxi and a police car collided on St Chads Queensway, which led to the road being closed at Snow Hill Queensway causing 'major disruption' in the process.

An officer driving the police car, which was responding to an incident, had to be cut out of the vehicle and had been taken to hospital. Another officer in the vehicle also received minor injuries.

The taxi driver and a passenger were uninjured. Birmingham police later confirmed that both officers have been checked over at hospital and only suffered minor injuries.

Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster had sent his "best wishes to the injured officer", adding: "Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery."

The St Chads Queensway closure resulted in a major disruption in Birmingham city centre this morning, with a number of city centre bus services being affected by the closed road. Drivers had been advised to seek alternate routes, although the disruption was clear by 2pm.
