Ozzy the Bull was named amid a fanfare with thousands joining a poll to pick its monicker - and now it’s time for the treasured star of the Commonwealth Games to return to Birmingham.

Network Rail shared images and videos last night (July 6) of the structure being carried into its new location in pieces. The massive mechanical bull - 10 metres tall, 13 metres long and five meteres wide, weighingh 2,506 kg - will have a permanent home in Birmingham New Street station very soon.

The display is expected to be ready in time for Birmingham Festival 23 - which will mark the anniversary of the Commonwealth Games. The animatronic bull - which was a star performer at the opening ceremony of the Opening Ceremony - had glowing red eyes, roared, moved its head and tail during the performance, and he is expected to do the same when he is completely rebuilt.

Birmingham New Street said in a tweet: “We’ve had a special delivery. A truck load of bull has now arrived at Birmingham New Street.”

It will be put together on the concourse before it is ready for display at the busiest station outside of London. Currently, there are huge hoardings up behind which the star of last year’s Commonwealth Games opening ceremony will be rebuilt over the coming days and weeks by a specialist team of designers and engineers.

After the opening ceremony, Ozzy the Bull was located in Centenary Square allowing residents and visitors to grab photos of and with it. He was supposed to end up in a scrapyard but Birmingham campaigned to save him.

And, Network Rail made space for the bull, which has since been named after Brummie legend Ozzy Osbourne aka the Prince of Darkness from Black Sabbath, on the concourse of the station. The rocker hailed the name after urging people to vote to name it after him.

He told BBC: “When I was asked last year to close the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, they didn’t have to ask me twice. I jumped on the next plane and flew back to England. I was honoured to close the Games. And, this year, I’ve been told that they’ve chosen my name to name the bull, which is going to be in the station I believe in Birmingham.

“I can’t believe it, I’m absolutely blown away. Thank you for all your votes. I don’t know what to say anymore. I’m just thrilled to bits. God bless you all. And Birmingham Forever!”

The positioning of Ozzy the bull has been met with some criticism as it would reduce the space for passenger thoroughfare after Network Rail said that a section of the concourse will be “out of action” while it is being rebuilt. They added that staff will be in place to help passengers navigate around the station.

Network Rail added: “Ozzy’s big build won’t impact on the running of trains, it will however mean there will be less space on that part of the concourse. People are asked to factor this into their journey and leave extra time to get to their platform.” However, others have hailed the return of the bull, a creature Birmingham is familiar with and adores - we hope the Bullring Bull doesn’t fee left out!
