Birmingham has been ranked among the friendliest cities in the UK, according to the 2024 Readers' Choice Awards. Its cosmopolitan charm and welcoming vibes secured it a spot in the top 10.

Brits are well known for their good manners and there’s nothing we love more than friendly communities here in the UK.

Walking into a pub and being served with a huge smile, or even just being greeted with small talk - that is also happy - can make the difference between an average day and a great one.

Media company Condé Nast canvassed opinion about top places where people can expect a warm welcome.

The 2024 Readers Choice Awards features a 10-strong list of places that people rate where cosy, friendly vibes are the norm.

We always knew Brummies were a friendly bunch - then again we may be biased - however it is always pleasing to see residents of our ace city get the national recognition we deserve!

The list of friendly places includes cities across the country, here is the top 10.

10. Birmingham. Score 80.00

The city’s cosmopolitan nature is a real attraction for people from all backgrounds. From award-winning galleries to Michelin-star restaurants, Birmingham is in the top 10 list of friendliest cities for very good reason.

9. Liverpool. Score 86.13

This port city with an intriguing maritime history also has a buzzing nightlife.

Music may be in the city’s DNA - it is after all home of The Beatles - but there is plenty going on the culture front too.

Liverpool has the UK’s second highest number of national museums, listed buildings and art galleries - second only to London.

Northern industrial powerhouse Manchester is a top place to be for culture vultures seeking avant garde art and a sparkling nightlife. Dulcet notes of the northern accent are raved about, just think of Peter Kay and the Oasis brothers and you’ll already feel a warm glow!

7. Belfast. Score 87.50

The city’s globally renowned manufacturing roots - Belfast was once regarded as the world's largest shipbuilding centre - are just one part of the rich history of the city.

This elegant, beautiful city continues to be the go-to destination for a spa-break packed with R&R.

Waters with reported healing properties, have always been a draw since Roman times.

However the new Thermae Bath Spa is likely to be a draw for visitors seeking a slice of tranquility in the 21st century too.

York is a bustling city with a rich Viking past, offering visitors an unforgettable historical adventure.

4. Oxford. Score 90.91

Oxford has so much more than a world-famous university.

The gorgeous melting pot that is London is also home to some of the UK’s most considerate people, according to this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards.

Home to iconic landmarks such as London Eye, Westminster Abbey and Tower of London, plus destination food places including Borough Market, it is easy to appreciate the draw of London.

1. Glasgow. Score 97.14

Glasgow clawed its way up from fourth position last year, to number one, as the UK’s friendliest city in 2024.

Glasgow’s art scene is globally renowned and the dining sector continues to thrive with its two Michelin-starred restaurants that attract diners seeking inventive cooking by local chef Graeme Cheevers and trailblazing chef Lorna McNee.
