British reggae band UB40 are celebrating their 45th anniversary with a big concert in a park in Moseley, Birmingham during the August Bank Holiday.
The band gained international stardom after starting out in Birmingham and they are giving the residents of the city a special outdoor performance in Moseley Park and Pool with a host of special guests. The performance named The Homecoming takes place on Sunday August 27.
Their journey started in Moseley where band members attended the Moseley School of Art and rehearsed in a cellar in Trafalgar Road, where Earl Falconer (bass/vocals) and saxophonist Brian Travers lived. Their first ever gig was at the nearby Hare And Hounds in 1979 and their debut album, Signing Off, was recorded in the basement of producer Bob Lamb’s Moseley home. Ali Campbell quit in 2008 and now fronts a band called UB40 featuring Ali Campbell. He won’t be part of the line-up.
Robin Campbell had said: “Moseley is where we started and spent our first formative years, so it will be a true homecoming and could get emotional.”
They have announced a great line-up for their performance where they will be joined by Soul II Soul, The Mouse Outfit, Don Letts, Freetown Collective, Friendly Fire and Young Culture Band. Not only that, it’s going to bring festival vibes with some of the best street food in Birmingham, exclusive films, artist Q&As with optional upgrades to a VIP Package.
Are there any road closures in Moseley for UB40’s performance?
The organisers told BirminghamWorld that there won’t be any road closures but they expect increased traffic volume on the day. In Moseley, particularly Alcester Road and Salisbury Road will be busier than usual. Acts are due on stage from 1pm on Sunday, August 27, with UB40 due on stage from 8.30pm to 10.30pm.
