Birmingham Marathon 2022: All the action from Victoria Square

Running for a total of 26.2 miles, runners taking part in the Birmingham 2022 Marathon began their route in Smithfield, ending up here in Victoria Square.

There was a lot of excitement to see the runners reach the finish line after an arduous journey through the city. Today’s route began at Smithfield, taking runners along a looped route of 18km which the athletes involved today ran twice. Runners headed towards Bournville, along the Belgrave Middleway and onto the Pershore Road, past Edgbaston Stadium, then into Cannon Hill Park.

They headed back towards the Pershore Road via Bournville Village Green and Sycamore Road, continuing back the the Belgrave interchange to complete the second lap. The final bout then saw runners come through the city centre, passing through the Chinese Quarter and Gay Village towards New Street Station, then through Paradise Circus, continuing toward Jewellery Quarter, before making their way back to the city centre for the final kilometer.

Well, we saw the Australians take the Gold in the women’s marathon, with Jessica Stenson completing the course in 2:27:31 seconds. Kenya came close to take home silver, followed by Namibia. And England came 11th place with Georgina Schwiening 2:40:09.

For the men, Uganda took the top place with Victor Kiplangat completing the course in 2:10:55 seconds. Followed by Alphonce Felix Simbu from Tanzania and then taking back bronze Michael Muggo Guitar from Kenya. England came 6th, with Jonathan Mellor completing the course 2:15:31.

England brought home Gold and Bronze for the T53/54 marathon, with Johnboy Smith and Simon Lawson completing the course in 1:41:15 and 1:45:59, with Scottish athlete Sean Frane scoring silver between them.

Australians took home the Gold for the women’s T53/54 marathon, with Madison de Rozario completing the course in 1:56, followed by Eden Rainbow Cooper for England. A fantastic start to the Games here in Birmingham.
