A Birmingham man has been jailed after punching a woman leaving her blind in one eye.

Rhys Buchanan, aged 23, had been in a relationship with the woman when, in a fit of jealously, he accused her of cheating. The single punch in May 2022 left the victim in hospital for several days, where surgeons were unable to save her sight.

Buchanan, from Pershore Road, Selly Oak, admitted causing grievous bodily harm on November 7 last year and was sentenced to three years and three months on Wednesday (February 14) at Birmingham Crown Court.

Investigating officer Kathryn Burns, from the West Midlands Police Public Protection Unit, said: “Violence against women in a domestic situation is a devastating crime that can have a profound impact on victims and their families.

“This young woman has been left with a life changing injury which has affected her, not only physically, but psychologically and emotionally.

“We work with several partner agencies and charities who can offer support to women who find themselves in an abusive situation and we would urge them to seek help if they feel able to.”
