Polling stations in Birmingham closed at 10pm last night (Thursday, May 5) and the votes for the 2022 local elections are underway at Utilita Arena.

The count began at 9am this morning, with the earliest declarations expected as early as noon, or later this morning depending on turnout. Single member wards will be declared first.

Shock as Labour loses both seats in Aston

A big shock here as Aston loses both of its Labour councillors, including the Lord Mayor Muhammad Afzal and Nagina Kauser.

The Liberal democrats Mumtaz Hussain and Penny Wagg gained both seats.

Labour secures majority in Birmingham

Labour has now officially secured their majority to retain control of Birmingham City Council.

They have currently secured 54 seats, more than 50%.

The final results are in and Labour has retained control of Birmingham City Council with 65 seats.

It was a disappointing day for the Tories won 22 seats, down from 28, while The Liberal Democrats won 12 seats and the Green Party added their second seat.
