A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a teenager was left seriously injured after being stabbed in Ladywood, Birmingham. A 17-year-old boy was discovered in Springfield Street at just after 6pm on Sunday (30 October).

He remains in a critical condition in hospital. A second boy, also aged 17, was taken to hospital with injuries which were not as serious. An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder last night (2 November) and remains in custody for questioning. Police enquiries into exactly what happened and why are continuing and we’d ask anyone who can assist the investigation to come forward.

A statement from West Midlands Police, read: “We understand the concerns this will have caused and we’ll continue to have extra patrols in the area to offer reassurance and be a point of contact. We want to keep our communities safe and we need your support to help our enquiries and enable us to understand any issues.

“To help prevent further violence we’ll again have s60 stop and search powers in place in Ladywood and the surrounding areas of Aston, Lozells and East Handsworth, Handsworth Wood, Winson Green and the City Centre between 4-11pm tonight (3 November). “This allows us to stop and search people we suspect may be involved in violence, or carrying weapons, without the need to have reasonable grounds. We’ll continue to review these powers on a daily basis.”

Superintendent James Spencer, from Birmingham Police, said: “We’re committed to working with our communities and partners to prevent violence and knife crime. Every time someone carries a knife or other weapon they run the risk of ruining lives, not only others but their own too.

“It’s illegal to carry knives or any other weapons and it can lead to a criminal record and prison sentence which impacts on education, employment and travel. While we’ll continue to take action to tackle violence we also understand the need to help young people and deter them from a criminal lifestyle. This is why we also want to educate and support them to make the right choices and away from criminal behaviour.”
