Traffic chiefs have issued travel advice ahead of Eid ul Fitr celebrations in Birmingham this weekend.

Congestion is expected around one major route in the city as Muslims across the city and West Midlands celebrate the end of Ramadan locally. Two events have been cancelled due to the bad weather. But several other events are still taking place.

West Midlands Roads (WMR) advised today (April 21) commuters to expect congestion on Coventry Road near Small Heath. They had warned people there would be heavy congestion on this route and surrounding roads due to Eid prayer and festivities in the area, including Small Heath Park.

Later, WMR updated their advisory saying: “Events in Small Heath have now been cancelled due to the weather conditions, however still expect heavy congestion in the area (Coventry Road) today (Friday, April 21). Allow extra travel time.”

Green Lane Masjid and community centre was going to host two Eid prayers at Small Heath Park and Edgbaston Stadium but they announced today (April 21) that the open air prayer congregation will not go ahead due to rain.

The roads around Small Heath Park were closed last year for Eid but no such advisory has been issued in 2023. Thousands of people were expected to visit the two Birmingham locations to offer Eid prayers but the events were cancelled.
