Since the New Year, the RSPCA found two abandoned dogs in Birmingham but in a first this year - a deceased dog was found floating in a canal - which the RSPCA has called “suspicious”.

The dog - which appears black in colour - was seen floating in the canal close to the bridge at Wharf Road in Kings Norton on January 8. The bridge is down the road from Kings Norton Baptist Church.

The dog appeared to be on its side in the water next to a wooded area. A concerned resident shared the images of the canine to seek help from residents of the area as she was unable to reach the body from land.

She said that the dog looks to be the size and build of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier or a small Labrador. It looks black but it could have lost its coat or it could have gotten discoloured if it’s been in the water a while, she added.

Hollytrees Boarding Kennels and Cattery in Hollywood, who also have rescue services, were contacted to help retrieve the body of the dog.

A Hollytrees Boarding Kennels and Cattery representative told BirminghamWorld: “We received a call about it yesterday. However, we have not been able to attend to the request yet. Ray (the owner) will be going around today to look for the dog.”
