Knife crime was back in the spotlight this week after the Crane nightclub in Digbeth had its licence revoked following the death of Cody Fisher who was stabbed on the premises.
Councillors voted on Tuesday afternoon to revoke the venue’s licence after the death of Mr Fisher, a 23-year-old football player for non-league Stratford Town. He died after being stabbed on the dance floor at the Digbeth venue on Boxing Day.
Cody’s death highlighted the growing issue of knife crime in Birmingham and across the country as a whole.
Lives across the country are needlessly lost through gang violence, with knife crime ruining the lives of families every year, and it’s a continuous problem in our region.
Government figures released in 2022 show that thousands of West Midlands youngsters were convicted or cautioned for knife crimes in just over a decade.
Ministry of Justice figures for West Midlands Police show young people were involved in 3,060 knife crime cases which resulted in cautions or convictions between July 2010 and June 2021, but the true scale of crimes involving children is likely to be higher.
The police work hard to get justice for the families of the victims of knife crime.
With that in mind, we’ve taken a look at the criminals who were jailed for stabbing killings in 2022.
1. Suleman Hassan: jailed for 9 years for manslaughter
Suleman Hassan, 18, was jailed in June for the manslaughter of Lamin Barrow. He had been stabbed on Chudleigh Road in Erdington. Lamin died from a single stab wound to the abdomen which penetrated his heart and damaged his lung. He was jailed for nine years | West Midlands Police
2. Cam’Ron Dunn: jailed for life for murder
Cam’Ron Dunn brutally stabbed Derlano Samuels in Cape Hill at around 4.10pm on 1 May 2021, stabbing him twice in the street before the 17-year-old tried to take refuge in a storeroom. 3. Kane Stonehouse: life sentence for murder
Kane Stonehouse lured another man to a secluded cul-de-sac in the middle of the night and stabbed him with a ceremonial dagger has been found guilty of his murder.
Gary Warner, aged 31, was stabbed in the chest as he sat in his car on Stone Avenue on the Falcon Lodge Estate, Sutton Coldfield on 31 October 2020. Stonehouse was jailed on 17 June | West Midlands Police
4. Halefom Weldeyohannes: life sentence for murder
Halefom Weldeyohannes stabbed a teenager to death before trying to burn her body after she rejected his advances has been jailed for life. The 26-year-old repeatedly knifed 19-year-old Yordanos Brhane at her home in in Unett Street in Newtown near Birmingham city centre on July 31 2021. A court heard she died as a result of strangulation as well as horrific stab wounds to her face and neck. He was jailed in August | Google Street View
