It’s not just the Clean Air Zone charges that Birmingham motorists are having to look out for when driving around the city.

New research has found that the city council is making the fifth highest amount of revenue from bus lane fines in the country in 2020/21.

The local authority made £2,134,051 from these penalties by issuing 64,325 fines to drivers during the 12 month period, according to a Freedom of Information request submitted to councils across the country by Moneybarn .

Birmingham was ahead of Edinburgh, Bristol and the London boroughs of Haringey, Waltham Forest and Ealing in the amount of revenue it earned.

In terms of the ranking for the amount of fines issued, Birmingham City Council was fourth - sending out more penalties than the likes of Edinburgh and Brighton.

Bus fines in Birmingham were highlighted recently when it came to light that drivers for the City Council Leader Cllr Ian Ward had been using bus lanes outside the Council House Extension on Margaret Street. The were photographed in the lanes.

The council said that it was not usual practice and that the drivers were being advised not to use the bus lanes in future when BirminghamWorld brought the issue to light.
