Leader of Birmingham City Council Cllr Ian Ward has announced his new cabinet - with women in the majority of seats for the first time

The new Birmingham City Council cabinet has been announced by the leader, Cllr Ian Ward.

Cllr Ward revealed the nine members who would be joining him in making the big decisions for Birmingham yesterday (Monday, May 16).

The announcement came after Cllr Ward (Lab: Shard End) kept his post as leader following a challenge from Cllrs Waseem Zaffer and Liz Clements.

Cllr Zaffar is not featured on the new line up - he was previously cabinet member for transport and the environment - but Liz Clements is.

She is one of seven women in the 10-strong team. It’s the first time in the history of Birmingham that the cabinet has seen a female majority.

Cllr Ward said: “I am delighted to announce Birmingham City Council’s new Cabinet, the first in Birmingham’s history in which women are the majority. This is a talented, diverse team and together we will deliver our New Deal for Birmingham which the people of our city elected us on

“We have an exciting year ahead of us in Birmingham, with the Commonwealth Games just two months away, and I look forward to working with our new Cabinet team and Labour Group to make the most of this opportunity for the people and communities of Birmingham.
