Birmingham City Centre: two teens stabbed in attempted robbery incident

The incident took place outside the Odeon on New Street just before 8.30am

Two teenagers suffered stab wounds during an attack in Birmingham city centre today. A section of the German Christmas Market had to be locked down as police launched an investigation.

The police cordon was at the scene where the young men, both 17, were stabbed has been removed. Both victims have been taken to hospital. They remain in hospital in stable condition and their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

West Midlands Police said: “We now believe they were attacked following an attempted robbery.”

A West Midlands Police spokesman previously said: “We’ve cordoned off the area and fast-track enquiries are ongoing to try and find those responsible.”

Some stalls at Christmas market cordoned off

A Birmingham City Council spokesperson previously said: “Following an incident near Odeon cinema on New Street earlier today, four Frankfurt Christmas Market stalls are within the police cordon in that area, and therefore will not be open until that cordon is lifted by West Midlands Police. However the rest of the Frankfurt Christmas Market on Victoria Square and upper New Street remain open as usual.”
