Birmingham booster jabs: How many people in Birmingham have had their Covid booster?

With fresh warnings and restrictions being introduced to deal with the Omicron Variant there’s a big push for everyone who is eligible to get their booster jab.

Vaccines have proven effective in battling coronavirus infections so it’s important that everyone heeds government advice and keeps up-to-date with jabs when they are notified by the NHS. A number of walk-in centres are available across the city to help you get your booster jab at the most convenient time.

According to stats from the NHS, as of 25 November a total of 2021 180,392 people in Birmingham had received three doses of Covid-19 vaccine.

The city currently has the fifth lowest take up of booster jabs among people aged 50 and over in England. There are 172,686 people in this age bracket who have had the Covid booster - which is 47% of the entire number of people aged 50 and over in the local authority.

Sandwell also sees just 47% of its 50 year-olds and over protected with the booster jab. While Solihull has 57% of residents in that age bracket vaccinated.

Torridge in Devon has the lowest take up among 50 year-olds and over with 41% having the booster jab. While Rochford in Essex has the highest rate, with 60% vaccinated.

The latest government figures for all people aged 16 and over in Birmingham show that 180,392 have had all three vaccines - which is 20% of the city population.

What has Birmingham City Council said about the local Covid booster vaccine take up rate?

Dr Varney, who is Director of Public Health, said: “The NHS is working hard to deliver the vaccination programme in partnership with the Council and communities across Birmingham.

“It is fantastic that over 80 per cent of 70yrs in the city are doubled jabbed and boosted and over 52 per cent of all 50 year olds are similarly protected and we are seeing the impact on falling case rates among over 60yr olds.”

Dr Varney added: “Birmingham has over 1.1 million eligible citizens for vaccination so the scale of the vaccination programme here is vast.

“The progress we have made is a reflection of the strong partnership and engagement with communities, especially our faith leaders and community organisation, and the resilience and dedication of our healthcare professionals.

“We are doing well but there is still a way to go before the whole city is protected and this is even more important with the threat of new variants emerging.”
