Birmingham bin strikes: Megapicket line shuts down depot

A megapicket line at the Lifford Lane depot in Birmingham has effectively shut down operations as supporters from across the county rally. Unite's Pete Randle highlights the power of collective union organisation, while Strike Map's Henry Fowler declares the mobilisation historic. Speeches from prominent union figures are set to inspire further action in support of the strike.

Today (Friday, May 9), the megapicket line has shut down the Lifford Lane depot.

As supporters from around the county make their way to Birmingham to join the megapicket, the site has been shut.

Pete Randle, Unite organiser said, “Today’s message is collective organisation across trade union movement shows the power unions have.”

The Megapicket has been organised in less than one week.

Henry Fowler, co-founder of Strike Map said, “This mobilisation is historic. The support for the Birmingham Bin Strike is rock solid on and off the picket line, victory to the workers!”.

The Megapicket is being held at Lifford Lane Depot, Ebury Road, Kings Norton, Birmingham, B30 3JJ, from 6am.

Speeches will start at 8am finishing around 9.30. Speakers include Kate Taylor (Birmingham National Education Union), Nina Barbosa (NHS Workers Say No), Mick Whelan (ASLEF), Pete Randle (UNITE), Steve Wright (FBU), Daniel Kebede (National Education Union), Onay Kasab (UNITE).
