A man, who was riding a cycle, died following a road traffic collision involving a car in Birmingham city centre.

The incident took place yesterday (Tuesday, May 16) on Belgrave Middleway near Birmingham Central Mosque around 2pm.

West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to the serious road traffic collision involving a car and a cyclist between the junctions of Horton Square and Haden Circus at 2.08pm.

The incident was attended by two ambulances, two paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma doctor, a critical care paramedic as well as the Midland Air Ambulance Critical Care Car.

On arrival, West Midlands Ambulance Service personnel found that a man, who was the cyclist, was critically injured. A WMAS spokeswoman said: “He was assessed and was in a critical condition. Ambulance staff immediately began administering advanced life support to him.

“Unfortunately, despite their best efforts it became clear that nothing more could be done to save him and he was confirmed deceased at the scene. The driver of the car did not require treatment.”

West Midlands Police also attended the incident and had closed the Belgrave Middleway for several hours yesterday (May 16). The roads are open this morning (May 17) and traffic has returned back to normal.

WMP had previously said: “We are currently dealing with a serious collision on Belgrave Middleway between the junctions of Horton Square and Haden Circus. The road is closed in both directions whilst investigations take place.”
