When it comes to bling, bags and watches, the public evidently know what they want – and are prepared to pay over the odds to get it.
A succession of items have gone under the hammer for way, way above the expected house.
The Jewellery Quarter business, established in 1876, has now highlighted the lots that sold for prices that staggered experts.
1. 19th century garnet ring, featuring Augustus
Take this 19th century garnet ring, featuring Augustus. It was expected to realise no more than £200, yet went for a whopping £117,000. Someone must’ve had a thing for Roman emperors. Fellows senior specialist Ben Randall said: “This was an amazing result!”
2. Chanel clip on earrings
One of the biggest surprises was provided by a pair of Chanel clip-on earrings. A spokesperson said: “Despite having an estimate of £30 to £50, the bidding soared to a staggering hammer price of £800. This unexpected turn of events highlighted the allure of Chanel jewellery.” When all costs are taken in, the overall price for the earrings was £1,040.
3. Edwardian copy of the Warwick Vase
An Edwardian silver copy of the Warwick Vase realised a price of £11,245 in May, yet was expected to sell for under £2,500. “The exquisite detailing of this piece resonated with collectors, leading to a fantastic outcome for the seller,” said the spokesperson.
4. Kelly II 32 Retourne by Hermes
Designer bags were very big in 2023. In October, a Kelly II 32 Retourne by Hermes handbag had an estimated price of between £6,000 and £8,000, but realised £10,140.
