The 1970s was a defining area for Birmingham, and it was also a decade that saw some brilliant rock, punk and reggae music emerge from the city and wider region.
The 70s saw the rise of punk rock and glam rock, with artists such as David Bowie, the Sex Pistols and the Police becoming household names across the country.
Britain also began to be increasingly influenced by Jamaican and Indian music, resulting in new music scenes and subgenres. The 1970s was also the decade in which heavy metal was born - with Birmingham playing a big part in its inception.
Here is a look back at some of the best local bands to come out of Birmingham and West Midlands during the era.
1. Black Sabbath
Quite possibly the biggest band to directly come out of Birmingham, Black Sabbath are known for their musical output during the 1970s. Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and co released three ground breaking albums in the early 70s, including: Black Sabbath (1970), Paranoid (1970) and Master of Reality (1971). Classic tracks such as War Pigs and Paranoid came from the albums, which went on to influence heavy rock bands. All four origional band members were born in Birmingham and Sabbath are often called the pioneers of heavy metal music
2. Electric Light Orchestra
ELO are also one of the biggest acts to come from the city. During the 1970s and 1980s, ELO released a string of top 10 albums and singles, including the band's most commercially successful album, the double album Out of the Blue, which was released in 1977. During ELO's original 13-year period of active recording and touring, they sold over 50 million records worldwide. The band's founders Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood are both from the city.
3. Steel Pulse
The roots reggae band from Erdington. They originally formed at Handsworth Wood Boys School, and were composed of singer David Hinds, Basil Gabbidon and Ronald McQueen. During the popularization of punk rock in the mid-1970's, Steel Pulse began to play punk venues such as the Hope and Anchor in London and The Electric Circus in Manchester in 1976
4. Led Zepplin
Ok, so Zeppelin aren't from Birmingham, but half of the the group's members do hail from the West Midlands region. Robert Plant is from West Bromwich, and legendary drummer John Bonham was born and raised in nearby Redditch. The band also played many shows in Birmingham during their early days. In 1970, they released Led Zeppelin III which featured "Immigrant Song".
