Bartley Green: 3 arrested after man dies

Two men and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 71-year-old man died following a fight near to a church.

Emergency services were called after violence broke out between multiple people on Shenley Lane, in Bartley Green, Birmingham, at 12.37pm on Sunday (9/1).

Officers arrived to find the pensioner in cardiac arrest and began first aid until paramedics took over - but he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

A 47-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder, while another man, aged 31, and a woman, aged 36, were detained on suspicion of murder and affray.

All three remain in custody being quizzed by detectives while investigations continue into the death, which took place yards from St Gabriel’s Church.

What have police said about the Shenley Lane incident?

Detective Inspector Ranjit Sangha, from West Midlands Police CID, said: “We’ve a team of detectives working hard to understand what happened yesterday.

“That includes who was involved, what roles they played and why they were fighting.

“We know there was a fight and passersby seem to have tried to calm the situation down.

What has the ambulance service said about the incident?

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson added: “We were called to reports of a medical emergency on Marston Road at at 12.37pm yesterday.

“Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the West Midlands Care Team were sent to the scene.

“On arrival we discovered one patient, a man who was in a critical condition.

“Ambulance staff immediately began administering advanced life support but sadly, despite their best efforts it became apparent nothing could be done to save the mAnyone with informationan and he was confirmed dead at the scene.”
