Plant food has been predicted to be big in Birmingham for 2024 - but are all locals on board with the food trend? We visit the city centre to talk to local people about their views

It's been increasing in popularity over the past few years and some culinary insiders predict 2024 will witness a significant upswing in consumer interest. Plant based meats are a common sight now on menus. I'm here today in Birmingham to get people's thoughts on alternative proteins.

Cameron says: “When it comes to supplementary meats, such as vegan types or anything that's kind of a different type, I have tried them. I think some of them are really tasty. I think they have a lot of fillers in them, which tends to be a big issue for myself. I do take a lot of pride in my own healthcare and I don't particularly find the nutritional value out of them the same as what you can get from just normal fruits and veg or from meats themselves.”

Chris says: “No, I think it's just a fad to be honest. I think people are going to still eat meat.” Cassie says: “Yes, I have tried it before. I tried it at a restaurant in Birmingham. I can't remember where it was actually called, but I think it was quite nice. I wasn't expecting it to be nice because obviously it wasn’t  meat. But I tried it. It was dead good. I loved it. I'm not sure if you've had it before.“

Lindy says: “I've tried it. I was vegetarian for about 17 years, so I ate it a lot. I think it's a really good thing and lots of people try it. It's more and more popular and it tastes better now than it's ever done. You can eat it and you feel like you're eating a real sausage. It's much improved to how it used to be and I've eaten it many, many times.”

Graham says: “Personally I don't like it, but I think probably it will take off. It's the thing that people want to do nowadays, but I don't follow fashion. I don't follow the trends. It doesn't taste good. I won't buy it.”
