Firefighters continue to tackle a blaze at Zeenat Supermarket on Alum Rock Road in Saltley.
West Midlands Fire Service was called to the blaze at 6.45pm on Monday, September 20. The fire had spread to flats above the supermarket and there were fears it could have spread to other neighbouring properties, including Thornton primary school which remains shut today (Tuesday, September 20). Residents have been urged to keep their windows and doors shut to prevent smoke entering their homes.
There are multiple road closures including St Agathas Road, Alum Rock railway bridge, Woodhall Road, Bankdale Road, Thornton Road, Washwood Heath Road, Chetwyn Road, Alum Rock Road and Beanie Lane.
The cause of the fire is currently not known and investigations are underway.

West Midlands Fire Service said: “12 fire engines, 5 brigade response vehicles and 2 hydraulic platforms are tackling the blaze which has spread to flats above the supermarket. Our crews are using main jets to prevent further spread and extinguish the fire, at the height of the incident we have had over 70 Firefighters at the incident.
“Safe , effective and assertive firefighting has prevented the fire spreading to neighbouring properties and Thornton primary school.
“We ask that people avoid the area and local residents keep their windows and doors shut.
“We are working closely with the police, ambulance and utility companies.
“Investigations are being carried out to determine the cause of the fire.
“There have been no reported injuries at this incident.”
What has Thornton Primary School said about the incident?
Due to the large fire next to the school today, school will be closed to all pupils tomorrow Tuesday 20th September as we make the site safe. Thank you for your understanding. We will let you know when the school will reopen.
