It will serve modern French cuisine, with the name Orelle drawing inspiration from the French words for gold (or) and her (elle). It is also the name of a French mountain village.

D&D London already runs successful French restaurants Coq d’Argent, Orrery and Le Pont de la Tour which remain stalwarts of the capital’s dining scene.

This is the company’s first venture in Birmingham. It already owns some of the best restaurants in London, Manchester, Leeds, Paris and New York.

The sky restaurant and bar at 103 Colmore Row will be accompanied by a street level café which will be open all day, before turning into a lively bar in the evenings.

The restaurant design has been strongly influenced by the site’s rich banking history – 103 Colmore Row is on the site of the former NatWest Tower - and incorporates richly veined marble floors, oak and walnut timbers, wall panelling, and a generosity of scale that symbolises the solidity of the banking heritage, creating an opulent and comfortable environment for diners.

The ground floor café space will also feature the original 1970s cast aluminium banking hall doors, designed and made by English abstract artist Henry Haig.

Inspiration from the Jewellery Quarter is reflected throughout Orelle, in the use of finely detailed golden metalwork in the café, gold veining of the marble restaurant floor and bar, bespoke light fittings, and jewel-like colours used in the furniture fabrics.
