Solihull: fourth boy, aged 6, dies after falling into Babbs Mill Lake in Kingshurst - full police statement

A six-year-old boy who was fighting for his life in hospital after falling into the lake at Babbs Mill Lake in Kinghurst on Sunday afternoon has today (14 December) died.

The heartbreaking news means that all four children, aged 10, 11 and 6, who fell into the freezing lake have now died. Police have also announced that searches at the lake have ended.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police, said: “It is with heartfelt sadness that we have to report this afternoon, the six-year-old in hospital has lost his fight for life.

“Our deepest sympathies are with the families and friends of those involved in this tragedy. We cannot comprehend the enormity of the pain they must feel and our hearts go out to them.

“Specialist officers remain in contact with the family and we will issue further information as soon as we can. The searches have been completed and the scene of the incident at the lake will be lifted this evening.”

West Midlands Fire Service said: “We’re devastated to hear the fourth child rescued from the Babbs Mill Lake incident a few days ago has very sadly died. We wish the family strength and comfort in these tragic circumstances.”

The children are understood to have been playing near the ice when it cracked, causing them to plunge into the water - one is reported to have rushed to help the others when he saw them get into trouble. Several of their friends then reportedly ran onto the lake in a bid to help before falling in themselves.

Two of the youngsters were taken to Birmingham’s Heartlands Hospital and two to Birmingham Children’s Hospital suffering cardiac arrest.

A candlelit vigil was held near the scene of the tragedy which was attended by more than 100 members of the devastated Solihull community. Dozens of floral tributes, balloons and candles were laid at the base of a tree in Babbs Mill Park to remember the boys.
