Major scrap yard fire in Birmingham - streets closed as West Midlands Fire Service tackles blaze

West Midlands Fire Service is battling a major fire at a scrap yard off Bordesley Green Road in Birmingham.

Crews were called to the incident at 4.43am on Saturday (November 5). West Midlands Police also attended and shut nearby Landor Street. Local residents and businesses have been asked to keep doors and windows closed to prevent risk of smoke damage.

The blaze involves around 30 tonnes of scrap metal. Six fire engines and 38 fire fighters have been sent to deal wit the incident. They are takng water from the nearby Grand Union canal and are being supported by the Canal and River Trust.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Fire Service said: “Good progress is being made at this incident. Live drone footage is being utilised to support firefighting operations.

“Our high-volume pumping unit is also in use to support water supply for the incident, taking water from the nearby Grand Union canal.”

At 1.47pm on Saturday, WMFS added that they expect to be at the incident for some time: “Crews continue to make good progress damping down. Two hydraulic platforms are now in use to support firefighting operations. Crews are expected to be at the incident for some time.

“Residents, local businesses and those driving through the area are still asked to keep doors and windows closed as there is still a large amount of smoke issuing from the site.”
