Animal charity Dogs Trust Kenilworth wants to make sure every dog really has its day! They are looking for forever homes for the cute and lovable dogs that are in their care - so they can have a second chance at thriving with a loving family.
From Beagles, Springer Spaniels, Chihuahuas to Border Collies and Akitas - the charity has a wide range of breeds of dogs that are available for adoption for the right home. These dogs will have match different lifestyles and needs of people, who are willing to show love and patience for their four-legged friend to settle in in their own time.
With this weekend being Grandparents Day (Sunday October 1) Dogs Trust Kenilworth is shining a spotlight on its OAPs (Old Age Pooches) so people near Birmingham with a dog-shaped hole in their lives will welcome a gorgeous golden oldie into their homes.
Since this summer, almost 40% wanting to adopt a dog have been looking for a pooch under six months old compared to just 10% looking for a dog aged 8 and over. However, the animal charity in the West Midlands hopes that these golden oldies will buck the trend.
Emma-Jane Thomas, Rehoming Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Kenilworth, said: “Sometimes older dogs can be overlooked in favour of younger pups, but they deserve just as much attention and care from new owners as their younger counterparts. There are lots of benefits of rehoming an Old Age Pooch. Often older dogs don’t need quite as much exercise and although they can be a little less energetic, senior canines can be just as fun and playful.
“Older dogs are more likely to be fully house-trained and, as they are older and wiser, they usually know other training basics too, but you can certainly still teach an older dog new tricks. They can also make the perfect napping partner and enjoy a good snooze and a snuggle.” So, here are 12 golden oldies currently patiently waiting to find families to spend their twilight years:

5. Lucy
Lucy, an 11-year-old Border Collie, is a beautiful older girl who still has bags of energy, despite being older. Lucy is looking for a fairly active retirement home where she still gets to go on lots of adventures. She is a quiet girl and loves getting lots of fuss and attention. Lucy is working on her socialisation at the moment so she is looking for a home as the only dog at the moment, with opportunities to socialise once she has settled. Lucy can be a little timid and unsure when meeting so is better suited to live with children 8 years and over. | Dogs Trust Kenilworth

6. Cookie and Layla
10-year-old Beagle Crosses, Cookie and Layla are typical beagles and love to explore and bellow at one another when they play. They still need assessing around other dogs so they are asking to be the only dogs in the home for now. Cookie and Layla have been lovely to look after since they have been at the centre so could possibly live with any age kids. The charity does ask any little ones come up at least two times to make sure everyone is happy. Cookie and Layla have come in with no history so may need help in all areas including housetraining and being left alone. They are a lovely duo and will make any family a happy home. | Dogs Trust

7. Candy and Roxy
Candy (L) is 12 years old and is a female Chihuahua. Candy is a 12 year old Chihuahua looking for a home together with her long term companion Roxy. They have been together since pups and rely on each others company. They sleep together in the same bed. The girls are looking for a quiet home where they can potter around the garden and have lots of strokes and fuss. They are very worried by other dogs so they would be better suited to not living with one. Candy can be quite nervous when she first meets new people so will need time to adjust to her new home. Roxy is more outgoing and loves to jump on your lap for a cuddle. The girls have lived with a cat in their first home so could possibly live with another one. They could live with older and sensible children that will give them the space they need and they would not cope well with a busy household. | Dogs Trust Kenilworth

8. Rio
A 10-year-old Akita, Rio is is a giant love bug who loves affection and his comforts, he seems to enjoy lazing around and sun bathing. Rio arrived with little information and may need training in all areas including housetraining and time left alone may need building up gradually leaving him with lots of homey comforts. He could potentially live with another dog in his new home after a successful meet at the centre, he is an older gent and would prefer quieter and calmer dogs. | Dogs Trust
