Birmingham train station named as one of the top ten most popular in the UK

A train station in Birmingham has been named as one of the most popular stations in the UK, according to the Office of Rail and Road.

A study by the Office of Rail and Road has revealed the top ten most used train stations in the UK from April 2021 to March 2022. Among them is a train station in Birmingham.

According to the study, 22,682,526 passengers either boarded a train at Birmingham New Street or got off the train there between April 2021 and March 2022. This makes Birmingham New Street the eighth most used train station in the UK between these time parameters.

Birmingham New Street is just one of two train stations on the list that are not located in London. The only other train station on the list outside of London is Manchester Piccadilly, which saw 19,581,442 people pass through it.

London Waterloo was the busiest train station in the UK, with 41,426,042 people boarding or getting off a train there. In second was London Victoria, which saw 36,776,338 passengers.

Third place went to London Bridge, which had 33,309,348 visitors between April 2021 and March 2022. In fourth and fifth were London Liverpool Street (32,165,310 visitors) and Stratford Station (28,182,238 visitors).

When a smiliar study was conducted between April 2020 and March 2021, Birmingham New Street came in eighth place then, also. The least used train station in the UK from April 2021 to March 2022 was Elton and Orston in Nottinghamshire, which saw just 40 entries and exits.

Feras Alshaker, Director of Planning and Performance at the Office of Rail and Road, said: “It is heartening to see passengers return to travelling by rail following what was a difficult period for the industry during the pandemic. There’s still some way to go in order for station usage figures to return to pre-pandemic levels. Once again it is important to thank all those in the rail industry, who continue to work hard to help people travel safely and with confidence.”
