It’s the legendary Brummie nightclub where the likes of Duran Duran took their first steps to international stardom.
The Rum Runner nightclub on Broad Street was one of Birmingham’s most famous venues in the 80s.
The club itself opened in 1964 and developed a reputation as a late night place for bands to hang out. Black Sabbath went there and the house band in the early 1970s was Magnum. They left in 1975 to concentrate on their own melodic pomp rock which would eventually gain them chart success in the 1980s.
After a visit to the legendary Studio 54 in New York at the height of the 1970s disco era, the owners remodelled The Rum Runner and progressive DJs played a mix of Roxy Music and David Bowie as well as jazz funk, which is when the club really thrived. It closed its doors in 1987.
A blue plaque was put on the site of the venue in 2022. Let’s take a look at some pictures of the club from the 80s:
